Welcome – Let’s Bloom!

Ever heard that old saying, “Bloom where you’re planted”?

We’re about to do some blooming right here, on the official blog for the 2009 Southeastern Flower Show–and you’re invited to bloom along with us!

It’s all about the opening of the 22nd Annual Southeastern Flower Show, Atlanta’s premier cultural event and the top juried horticultural competition in the Southeast.

Pardon the pun, but when this “perennially” popular show opens in the Cobb Galleria, next January 28 through Feb. 1, you’ll find more stunning flowers and foliage–more color and fragrance–more speakers–more designs–more horticultural tips–more workshops and demos–more marketplace shopping–and more sheer razzle-dazzle than ever before.

As some of you flower-fans may remember, the show has its roots in the old Atlanta Flower Show, which debuted in the now-defunct City Auditorium back in 1988.

Over the years, the flower show occasionally changed locations and leadership, but it maintained a long partnership with the Atlanta Botanical Garden.  By 2006, the show had donated over 1.3 million dollars to the ABG. That’s a lot of green, and we don’t mean the kind you find in your landscape.

Today the show has evolved into a fully independent, non-profit organization that comes under the umbrella of the Southeastern Horticultural Society.  The 2009 show will be headed by new Executive Director, Kate Chura, who brings some twenty years of experience and excellence in cultural and environmental affairs to this crown-jewel event.

As for me–your intrepid blogger—I’m Lynn Coulter, a gardener from Douglas County, Georgia.  I’m a magazine journalist and the author of two books: Gardening with Heirloom Seeds (Univ. of NC Press,  2006), and Mustard Seeds: Thoughts on the Nature of God and Faith (B&H Books, Sept. 2008).  Want to know more about me?  Please visit my website, www.LynnCoulter.com.  I’m thrilled to have been selected as the “Master Blogger” for the Southeastern Flower Show, your guide to all that’s green and growing for the next few months.

So you say you’re looking for new ways to bloom?  You’re longing for both art and beauty?  Seeking some gardening gurus and horticultural help?  Eager to see new and exotic gardens, while you “oooh” and “aaah” over familiar and beloved plants?

You’ve come to the right place. Visit our blog often, and find out what’s on the 2009 Southeastern Flower Show schedule, so you can start planning your visit.  We’ll share what’s going on behind the scenes as the designers and exhibitors prepare, and tell you about opportunities to get involved and have fun.

We’ll also welcome your comments and questions.  Feel free to ask us why your tomatoes cracked over the summer’ how to keep hungry deer out of the hydrangeas; how to arrange a unique centerpiece for your holiday table; or how to create stunning window boxes for the winter season.  Pretend we’re leaning over the garden gate, talking about what works in your yard, and what doesn’t.  We’ll learn more about this fascinating hobby of gardening and designing together.

Remember: check back often, and dig in.  Let’s bloom!

Cheers,

Lynn
